There are 4 different areas (well 5 if you count Newton Meter as well) that are measured on a gas strut and below is a simple illustration outlining the different parts of the gas strut.
These measurement all help in ensuring the gas strut that you order does the job of lifting to the desired height (extended length) and fit into the space when closed (compressed length) and the amount that it can open (stroke length) and diameter, how much Newton’s (force) you can put into the strut.
- Extended Length
- Stroke Length
- Compressed Length
All these measurement relate to how the Gas Strut functions
What is the Extended Length of a Gas Strut?
Extended Length refers to the length of gas strut when fully open.
How to Measure the Extended Length of a Gas Strut
To measure the extended length of a gas strut you measure from the middle of the end fitting to the middle of the end fitting
What is the stroke of a Gas Strut?
This relates to the gas struts ability to open to your desired opening. Its the bit that goes in and out of the canister when the door or window opens or shuts.
How to measure the Stroke of a Gas Strut?
To measure Stroke on a gas strut you measure between the end fitting and the canister. (Its the bit that goes in and out when the door or window opens)
What is the Compressed Length of a Gas Strut?
The compressed length of a gas strut is when the gas strut is completely closed. Normally when the window or door is closed and can be measured pretty easy when a gas strut fails because it no longer has any Newton Meters (force) left in so the gas strut will be very easy to push closed.
This is important to ensure it will fit into the space allocated when closed. If it is too big the window or door will not close.
How to measure the Compressed Length of a Gas Strut?
Measure from the middle of the end fitting to the end of the canister
Measure from the middle of the end fitting to the end of the end fitting on the shaft end
Then add the two measurements together.

What is the Diameter of a Gas Strut ?
The diameter of a gas strut is the measurement across the rod and across the canister.
How to Measure the Diameter of a Gas Strut
To measure the diameter of a gas strut there are two areas that you measure, across the rod and across the canister.
